Neck and collarbone
Gentle movements commonly begin near the central lymphatic pathways around the neck and collarbone.
Gentle rhythm, a feeling of lightness
A very gentle treatment using light pressure, slow rhythms and repeated pumping movements to encourage comfortable fluid movement and deep relaxation.

Treatment character
Very gentleLight pressure and repeated pumping movements — not firm work on the muscles.
What is lymphatic drainage massage?
Lymphatic drainage massage is a very gentle treatment designed to encourage the movement of fluid through the body’s superficial lymphatic pathways. Unlike deep tissue or sports massage, it uses light pressure, slow rhythms and repeated pumping movements rather than firm work on the muscles.
A treatment may begin around the neck and collarbone before moving to the abdomen, legs, arms or other areas. Gentle abdominal massage is often included because breathing and movement around the abdomen contribute to the natural circulation of lymphatic fluid.
Facial lymphatic massage can also be included upon request. This uses delicate movements around the face, jaw and neck and may be particularly relaxing for people who experience temporary facial puffiness or tension.
A considered sequence
Gentle movements commonly begin near the central lymphatic pathways around the neck and collarbone.
Soft abdominal work and relaxed breathing may support natural movement through the trunk.
Slow, repeated strokes are adapted to the areas that feel heavy, puffy or uncomfortable.
Delicate work around the face, jaw and neck can be included for relaxation and temporary puffiness.
Potential benefits
Support lymphatic circulation. Gentle, rhythmic movements are intended to encourage fluid towards functioning lymphatic pathways.
Reduce feelings of heaviness or puffiness. Some clients report that congested areas feel lighter following treatment.
Support medically managed swelling. Clinical manual lymphatic drainage is often used within wider lymphoedema programmes.
Promote relaxation. The slow pace and light pressure can be deeply calming.
Improve body awareness. The treatment may help you notice areas of sensitivity, tension or fluid retention.
Create a feeling of lightness. A gentle option when firmer muscular massage is not what you need.
What does the research say?
Research on clinical manual lymphatic drainage usually involves people with diagnosed lymphoedema. Those findings should not automatically be applied to healthy people receiving a general wellness massage.
A randomised clinical study involving people with upper-limb lymphoedema reported that image-guided manual lymphatic drainage improved movement towards functioning lymph nodes. This relates specifically to diagnosed lymphoedema managed in a clinical context.
Barbieux et al., 2023 ↗A systematic review found evidence that lavender-based interventions may reduce anxiety, although the studies varied widely. It remains unclear how much benefit comes from the oil, massage, expectation or their combination.
Donelli et al., 2019 ↗Important distinction: essential oils may contribute to relaxation and aroma, but they have not been shown to directly improve lymphatic drainage.
Optional additions
A calm, personalised approach
Overall, lymphatic drainage massage offers a gentle and calming way to support comfortable fluid movement, relaxation and a feeling of lightness. The treatment is adapted to your preferences and may include abdominal work, facial massage upon request, a relaxing foot massage or selected aromatic oils.
